DESCRIPTIONS OF THE MANY SCHUNDLER COMPANY
HORTICULTURAL PRODUCTS AND BRANDNAMES

SCHUNDLER COMPANY PERLITE

Expanded horticultural perlite comes in a number of sizes, and can be screened to reduce the amount of fines or to create special blends or products. During 1994, The Perlite Institute developed a basic specification or standard for horticultural gradations of perlite (see Standard Gradations of Perlite---Fine, Medium, Coarse Defined)---although names and gradations can and do change from manufacturer to manufacturer throughout the world. Generally coarser, screened grades are used to provide more aeration and drainage in peat mixes, medium grades are used for propagation and seed mixes, and finer grades are used when both a lot of aeration and water retention are desired and for use outdoors. In hydroponic applications and 100% perlite containers, unscreened and mixed grades often are used.

The Schundler Company produces the following horticultural perlite products:

SCHUNDLER COMPANY VERMICULITE

Expanded or exfoliated horticultural vermiculite comes in a variety of sizes ranging from extra coarse vermiculite (also known as Schundler CV4 or A-4), Glitter grade vermiculite(also known as CV3 or A-3), Medium Grade Vermiculite (also known as Schundler CV-2 or A2), and extra fine grade (CV-1 or A-1). Much like perlite, vermiculite grades will provide more aeration and drainage if they are larger, and more water retention if they are smaller. Because smaller or medium grades of vermiculite will compact and hold so much water, they are ideal for seed trays and some propagation mixes. Glitter grade is used most often in peat mixes and potting soils, and larger grades are used in special mixes where more drainage and aeration are desired. Because of its excellent cation exchange capacity, vermiculite often is used to enhance the performance of fertilizers and other additives. For outdoor use generally perlite is better, but still many people do use a variety of grades for outdoor applications.

The Schundler Company produces the following vermiculite horticultural products:
